The National Skills Commission (NSC) works to provide expert advice and national leadership on the Australian labour market, current and future skills needs and workforce development issues.

They have launched their new website and released their first report – A snapshot in time: Australia’s Labour Market and COVID-19, exploring the impact COVID-19 has had on the labour market and the skilling and re-training needed to get people into jobs.

The report captures a point-in-time analysis of the state of the labour market in relation to COVID-19, and highlights how its work will support Australia through the recovery period. The NSC found that while there was a significant decline in employment, which rose to 7.1% in May 2020, there are some signs of early stabilisation with data showing an increase in the number of employers looking to hire, or re-hire, workers. By building a better understanding what is happening in the labour market, the structural shifts that will occur and the skilling and re-training needed to get people into jobs, the NSC is helping people get back into work.
