After extensive consultation with industry in 2021, Australian Industry Standards (AIS) recommended the establishment of a Heavy Vehicle Driver Apprenticeship using the current Certificate III in Driving Operations qualification. Read more about the AIS consultation here.

The aim is to:

  • assist in improving the professionalism of the heavy vehicle driver role
  • address critical driver shortages
  • increase the attraction to industry.

The next step is to have the Certificate III in Driving Operations declared as an apprenticeship in Queensland.

What the Queensland Trucking Association (QTA) are doing as the Industry Skills Advisor (ISA):

We are developing an Industry Proposal for submission to the Department of Employment, Small Business and Training, to request the Certificate III in Driving Operations qualification be declared as an apprenticeship in Queensland and be considered for funding subsidies under the User Choice Program.
